An even more lugubrious than usual Brian (Alun Armstrong) is walking his dog and trying to make the best of all of his newfound free time. But it’s not long before crime is on his mind once more when a book-group friend of Esther’s begs for his help. She wants to find her accountant brother, who went missing six years ago in very murky circumstances.
It’s a laboriously complicated story, packed with the names of people we never meet. In fact, halfway through, Brian conveniently asks his wife Esther to give him a brisk run-through of the story so far. Maybe someone else was feeling confused, too. Soon all the Tricksters wade in – even Esther (Susan Jameson) has a crime-fighting moment.
While Brian spends time at home making peace with himself over his dismissal, he agrees to help Esther's friend Margaret find her missing brother Peter, in the interest of keeping his mind active. Peter was the accountant of a man who has gone to prison for the murder of his wife, so Brian visits the convict hoping he will be able to assist. However, his investigation begins to encroach on the Ucos team's efforts to track down a conman who may be connected to several outstanding cases. With Rosalind Ayres and Art Malik.
