Review

Simon Kelsey just loves everything about the dilapidated Victorian mansion he’s bought relatively cheaply from Hull City Council on condition that he renovates it within a year. He loves its front steps, its cornicing and its air of grandeur. He also cares deeply about the local community and remains upbeat despite the challenge.

“Everything’s bigger than you expect, wetter than you expect, and takes more time and more money,” he happily explains about the time it’s taking and problems he’s facing. As if the council deadline isn’t tough enough, Simon’s promised his fiancée it will be habitable before their wedding. You can’t help but hope he’ll do it.

Summary

Simon Kelsey had known and loved one particular property in Hull's Coltman Street since he was 10, a grand Victorian town house in one of the most deprived areas of the city that ended up being converted into flats and left to decline. He bought it on the condition that the house was restored into a single dwelling and to a high standard. But with the council worried about slow progress and Simon's funds diminishing fast, could he end up bankrupt and homeless? Caroline Quentin reviews his progress.
