Review

This episode from 2011 has the beautifully generic subtitle Dark Secrets. When was any storyline in Midsomer Murders not based on secrets, dark or otherwise, erupting from the past?

The suspects for the murder here include a stud manager who’s an unwilling stud himself; an artist-cum-horse-whisperer played by Haydn Gwynne, and a pair of aged recluses living in a stately pile surrounded by pizza boxes and vast towers of old Daily Telegraphs.

Classy guest stars Edward Fox and Phyllida Law are enjoyably batty as the recluses, while Beth Goddard has a ball playing their bitchy daughter. Barnaby’s challenge is to work out what a map of the Moon has to do with any of it.

Summary

The life of an eccentric and reclusive couple comes under police scrutiny when a social services investigator is killed, and Barnaby must unearth generations of family secrets and decipher astronomical charts to find the murderer. Meanwhile, the detective's wife Sarah (Fiona Dolman, The Royal Today) arrives in Midsomer as the new head of a local school. Drama, starring Neil Dudgeon and Jason Hughes, with Phyllida Law, Edward Fox and Neil Pearson.
