Scott & Bailey

Series 4 - Episode 8

Scott & Bailey has always been the antidote to blood-splattered crime dramas such as Silent Witness and Luther. Instead of gore we get interrogation-room grillings and this episode is a belter. The antagonist is Evie Pritchard, whom we first met last week when – spoiler alert – her husband got involved in a high-speed car chase.

It looks as though she’s running a slavery ring at her remote farm and the squad is determined to prove her guilt. Evie’s played by Ellie Haddington and she’s absolutely terrifying. You may recognise her from Foyle’s War where she’s spy boss Hilda Pierce and Corrie – she was Don Brennan’s one-time girlfriend Josie.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a series finale without some personal problems thrown into the mix. So we get the fallout from the shock death of Rachel’s mum and the nagging problem of Gill’s reliance on the bottle. Oh – and Janet decides to stop putting her life on hold by accepting Chris Crowley’s offer of dinner. Hurrah!

The discovery of slaves on the Pritchard farm has turned a murder inquiry into a multi-agency operation. The enormity of the case brings Dodson to Syndicate 9, keen to establish Gill's state of mind and efficacy as senior officer. Having been the driver involved in the fatal collision with Cal Pritchard, Janet is under investigation and unable to interview the man's widow Evie. Devastated by the consequences of her actions, the detective eventually finds solace in Chris's calm and kind reasoning, but when an incandescent Evie smells alcohol on Gill's breath, she has all the ammunition she needs to discredit the case and bring the DCI down.
