Stanhope’s flashes of anger and spiteful putdowns reach apocalyptic levels. She’s a straight-talking woman working in a difficult, male environment, but I’m beginning to wonder whether she’s menopausal and has forgotten to take her HRT.
Following the suicide of Jeanie Long, in prison for a murder she swears she didn’t commit, new evidence comes to light. It means reopening the case — and in the process a lot of old wounds because everyone, even the investigating officer of the time, seems to be lugging around emotional baggage. Vera pursues several false leads before stumbling, implausibly, on some vital evidence.
Following the suicide of Jeanie Long, the woman convicted of the murder of teenager Abigail Mantel 11 years earlier, new evidence comes to light exonerating her. DCI Vera Stanhope reinvestigates the case, but to find out who really killed Abigail, the detective must uncover the secrets of a close-knit community that is still coming to terms with the incident. Detective drama, adapted from Ann Cleeves' novel Telling Tales, guest starring Hugo Speer alongside Brenda Blethyn, David Leon, Wunmi Mosaku and Paul Ritter.
