Episode 8: All Is Safely Gathered In

Summary

Capt Mainwaring and the platoon offer to help Pte Godfrey's widowed friend gather in the harvest on her farm - but their well-meaning efforts end in predictable chaos. Comedy first aired in 1972, starring Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier and Arnold Ridley.

Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Certain episodes of the imperishable comedy almost defy criticism. This nostalgic, Cider with Jonesie-style caper is one such. From start to picture-perfect finish, it brims with back story, well-executed gags and loving craftsmanship.

Mainwaring is floored by Godfrey’s request for leave, only to learn it’s to help a farmer’s widow (and old flame) bring in the harvest. Action stations!
The blue-skied location shoot is sitcom sunshine all the way: Walker making hay with the Land Girls, Jones getting tangled in the thresher and the whole platoon becoming pie-eyed on potato wine. If ever, one day, BBC2 decides to screen its last Dad’s Army, this is the one to remember the show by.
