Episode 3: Mary Berry's Foolproof Cooking

Summary

The Great British Bake Off judge prepares a selection of dishes perfect for outdoor entertaining and lazy summer days, beginning with a whole seabass with lime and dill butter. Mary then meets experts Jules and Nick to have a go at catching crayfish in the waters of Oxfordshire, before using the crustaceans in an oriental vegetable salad. She then demonstrates simple recipes for lamb burgers with mint mayo, and smoked Texan chicken wings, and finishes with refreshing lemon and elderflower jellies.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Mary Berry’s a great one for simplifying things - and not just recipes. Her favourite kitchen utensil appears to be the simple polythene bag - used in so many of her recipes as an aid to marinate or coat food. But while I’m prepared to believe she caught crayfish using a twig, string and a bit of bacon (much to the amusement of an expert fisherman) I don’t know about the basic barbecue she makes from an old metal wheelbarrow. Surely she has a state-of-the-art barbecue to go with her glorious house and garden?

Her theme is summertime eating, so this is a delightfully sun-drenched episode strewn with easy-to-remember hints.
