Episode 6: Who Will We Be?

Summary

A journey into the future, asking what is next for the human brain and how technological advances are poised to change individuals and society. Dr Eagleman meets a woman who had half her brain removed at the age of four and visits the Blue Brain Projects in Lausanne, Switzerland, where scientists are attempting to model a simulation of the working brain.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Inevitably, Dr Eagleman's cruise through cognition ends in the future. What might we have evolved into in thousands of years' time? Who needs ears and eyes when we could, in theory, input any kind of data directly into our brains? Might we even be able to cheat death by preserving our grey matter?

Work has already begun, we learn, on brain-imaging technology, which some day might be able to map an entire mind. The catch is, the amount of info in a single brain would equal all the digital data in the world today.

The concepts get increasingly out-there as the programme progresses. You won't see a more noggin-nourishing series.
