Episode 3: Who Is in Control?

Summary

Neuroscientist David Eagleman continues his exploration of the inner workings of the brain, revealing how although people may feel in conscious control of their lives, in fact almost every action they take is driven by parts of the unconscious mind.

Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

While holding a hot drink you’ll feel emotionally warmer towards your mother. Sitting next to a hand sanitiser will make you more right-wing. In this enlightening episode about control, these and other less dubious-sounding psycho-nuggets illustrate how the conscious mind governs our actions far less than we realise. Your “personality” is just the tip of the iceberg; the subconscious (influenced by genetic and environmental factors) pulls the strings.

Towards the end, science and philosophy converge as we dive into some scarily deep waters. “Do you have free will of any kind?” asks Dr Eagleman, can of worms in hand.
