Episode 2: Arcadia

Summary

A mysterious fire that killed an artist with links to political activists leaves the police baffled, while Bright finds himself short-staffed when a stomach bug puts most of his men on sick leave. The situation becomes more serious when a housewife dies of the same condition. Endeavour investigates a family-run supermarket, believing the infection may have stemmed from their stock being deliberately contaminated, and discovers dark secrets that may have a connection to the unexplained blaze.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

There are many strands to this story – anti-apartheid protests, Green Shield Stamps, food contamination as a blackmail weapon and a deadly automatic tea-making machine. Yes, it’s all happening in 1960s Oxford now that Morse is back where he belongs.

The murder of a Jackson Pollock-ish artist leads Morse and his lugubrious boss Thursday to a hippy commune. The look on Thursday’s face as he’s greeted by a young woman flowerchild is an absolute picture. Fred’s views on the permissive society are as trenchant and vivid as you’d expect: “Free love? In my experience it’s the most expensive kind there is.”

Besides, Fred (super Roger Allam) has no time for such nonsense when a young woman dies after a visit to a supermarket.

And Tony Hancock fans – pat yourselves on the back if you spot a “hidden” little in-joke reference to the Lad Himself.
