Summary

The young detective is suspended from duty following a recent case. However, he is roused from his bitterness and self-pity when the body of a woman who went missing at a funfair on Cowley Green is found near his home. He resolves to conduct a secret investigation of his own, which leads him to the city's social elite and a disturbing secret hidden in plain sight. Shaun Evans stars as the young Inspector Morse in the third series of the detective drama.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

After the tumult of the last series’ final episode, Morse is living alone in the woods in a friend’s borrowed shack. Across the water is a Great Gatsby-like figure, Joss Bixby, an enigmatic and unhappy millionaire who throws huge, opulent parties. Like Gatsby, Bixby pines for a lost, unattainable love.

If you know F Scott Fitzgerald’s book (or even the film versions) it’s a simple leap to see Morse (Shaun Evans) as the Nick Carraway figure, the penniless outsider who gets caught in a fast crowd. But despite everything that happened after the shooting of his boss Fred Thursday (the sublime Roger Allam) he’s still a copper, with a copper’s instincts, and when a young woman dies in a road accident, he looks askance at his new “friends”.

The story is a real stretch, but never mind, its period details are glorious and it’s good to see old pals again.
