Rating: 4 out of 5.

A shooting on a fishing boat is claimed by all aboard to have been an accident, but it puts Salvo on the scent of a bigger mystery in a film that takes in a Mafia hitman, twin sisters who run a gym, an explosion in a fireworks factory and a Shrove Tuesday masked ball that ends in horror.

Much of the tortuous detective work seems merely a framework to explore the bonds between the regular characters. There’s a turning point in Livia and Salvo’s love life when she sees what he’s capable of in the line of duty, while Mimi at last earns his stripes as an officer and best friend, in a winning portrayal by Alessio Vassallo, expressive gestures et al.
