Episode 5: The Honest Thief

Summary

Salvo requests a transfer to Genoa to be closer to Livia, but it is clear from his demeanour he is reluctant to leave his beloved Sicily. However, all thoughts of relocating are put from his mind when a Milanese barmaid living in Vigata disappears. Rumours abound about her excessive promiscuity, and people begin to jump to sordid conclusions. Montalbano balances this case with another involving a spate of unusual burglaries, in which the victims report the theft of bafflingly small amounts of money. Crime drama, starring Michele Riondino. In Italian.

Review

Salvo has a late-night crisis. He’s made stuffed sardines but, distressingly, he’s run out of chilled white wine. As there appear to be no off-licences in Sicily, he belts to the nearest bar where an accommodating woman can offer him only a half-full bottle of prosecco. Still, needs must.
When the woman vanishes, Salvo and the team look into her background and discover she was a bit of a goer who kept a diary of her lovers’ details. “They even did it on the kitchen table!” shrieks her housekeeper. It’s another languid, picturesque investigation, given added piquancy when Salvo decides he must transfer to Genoa to be near his girlfriend Livia.
