Episode 1: The Man Who Followed Funerals

Summary

A Vigata inhabitant, who has made a habit of showing up at other people's funerals, is found brutally murdered in the street, and only the disappearance of a woman linked to his former employer gives Montalbano his first lead. Detective drama, starring Michele Riondino. In Italian.

Review

BBC Four begins a welcome rerun of series two, first shown in 2016.

Michele Riondino stars as a youthful Salvo Montalbano alongside younger versions of his usual sidekicks: randy/soppy deputy Mimi, dogged Fazio, and Catarella, the calamitous desk sergeant; as well as his radiant lover, Livia, who is hiding some important news. The locations are timeless so it’s hard to spot the signs that tell us it’s the early 1990s: period cars, talk of lire not euros, an absence of mobile phones and a reference to the Bosnian war.

Two cases intertwine: the disappearance of an unfaithful wife and the murder of a limping man who attended many funerals. A tiny link and an eye for eggs help Salvo win the day.
