Episode 9: Bolsover Castle 2

Summary

Fiona Bruce presents the second of two episodes from Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire. Items brought in to be valued include a painting by DH Lawrence, a broken pot with a connection to the abolition of slavery, a 19th-century pistol, a collection of vintage hats, a complete set of Famous Five books and a rare jade pendant dug up in the garden of a 17th-century house.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

It was a bit breezy when the Roadshow made its second visit to Bolsover where £3,000 seemed to be the valuation du jour. But if many of the appraisals are in the same price bracket, the items couldn’t be more different.

There’s a fabulous collection of vintage hats that gets Hilary Kay and Fiona Bruce squealing with delight; possibly the most elaborate door lock you’ve ever seen; a lace bobbin winding machine; and an ancient jade amulet its owner dug up while weeding her garden.

There are also several of those lovely moments where an item bought for pennies or found discarded in a skip turns out to be worth a fair bit.
