Episode 2: Last Man Standing - Part Two

Summary

Part two of two. Danny takes Gerry on the run as they search for the proof they need to prove his innocence - despite Gerry remaining tight-lipped about his involvement with dodgy dealings in his old unit. The stakes are high as the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad goes after one of the biggest crime families in London, and it's those closest to Gerry who are dangerously put in the firing line. Starring Dennis Waterman, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Tamzin Outhwaite and Denis Lawson.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Be warned: this episode of New Tricks starts with a funeral, as the Tricksters mourn the loss of someone close to them – but who? Before we find out, the story jumps back to a week earlier, with Gerry (Dennis Waterman) still very much under the cosh. It doesn’t help that his cosh – the police truncheon with his initials on the end – was used to kill that DCI 30-odd years ago and the evidence suggests he had an extra reason to bump off said DCI: Gerry was seeing his wife.

The team have to find a way to absolve their comrade before the case is passed to another squad. “Gerry Standing is no angel, but he’s not a murderer,” avers their stolid boss Strickland. Proving that may be harder: Gerry refuses to come clean on the mess of police corruption that was the Met in 1983. The flashbacks to the 80s are well done, and there’s genuine tension in the story. Plus, we meet a retired copper we’ll be seeing more of, one Ted Case – played by Larry Lamb.
