Episode 1: Last Man Standing - Part One

Summary

Part one of two. Gerry is spooked by the discovery of UCOS's latest victim - a cop, whose body has lain untouched under a basement for 30 years. As accusations of police corruption and underhand dealings begin to surface, Gerry has to face up to some skeletons in his own closet and it's a race against time for the team to help before his murky past catches up with him. While babysitting his grandson, Gerry becomes convinced that only he holds the key to the investigation and goes Awol to uncover the truth. Starring Dennis Waterman and Denis Lawson.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

New Tricks is like a vintage car that in the course of its lifetime has seen every part and panel replaced at some stage. Now only the front bumper – played in this analogy by Dennis Waterman – remains from the original showroom model, yet the whole is still recognisably what you started with: the spirit lives on.

As of this episode, however, even that bumper is hanging off. It’s well known that Waterman is leaving the series after a valedictory two-parter (to be replaced by Larry Lamb), but on the evidence here, he’ll go out on a high. It’s a strong, snappy story that revolves around a body found in a basement – that of Gerry’s old DCI from the 1980s.

Suddenly our old-timer is knee-deep in ghosts from his past and coppers on the take from local gangsters. “The lines were blurred back then,” Gerry blusters. “It was hard to tell who was properly dodgy and who just had a few tasty mates.” As he flails around trying to un-blur the lines, Gerry’s career and reputation hang by a thread.
