Episode 1: Joint Session

Summary

Selina and her staff prepare for her inaugural speech as president to the Joint Session of Congress, while Gary questions his worth now he can no longer be close to her. Amy discovers a rival campaign manager may be making a play for her job. Return of the political satire, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

After three series of the snappiest, sweariest sitcom on TV, the title might need changing. Because Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is no longer an embittered vice-president. She’s made it to the Oval Office, after the President had to step down in tragic circumstances.

Suddenly, those human errors among her staff that always torpedo her best efforts are on a bigger stage. The mess-ups matter, not least when the new president addresses a joint session of Congress and her autocue goes agonisingly, hilariously blank.

It’s the start of a terrific episode, written, directed and produced by Brits (veterans of The Thick of It, for the most part) who reduce US politics to low farce and a conveyor belt of joyously filthy one-liners.
