Episode 6: One Born Every Minute

Liverpool Women's Hospital opens its doors to 16-year-old Heidi, who is accompanied by her own mum Jo, and Adele, the mother of the baby's father, who has decided to take her son's place in the delivery room. Dad-to-be Gavin hopes poetry will help his jittery wife Michelle get through giving birth to their second child, and 46-year-old Jane finds herself laughing through her daughter Louise's contractions as a means of coping with the stress of being a birthing partner.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Midwife Hana is One Born’s resident mystic, dispensing wisdom that belies her tender age. Here, one of her maxims – “difficult situations make us who we are” – handily applies to all three mums-to-be.

Heidi, 16, is joined by mum Jo and “other nan” Adele. Her pregnancy was a shock for both families, but they’re determined to make sure Heidi and baby get all the support they need.

Laid-back Louise and mum Jane – who have repaired their relationship after a rift when Louise was a teenager – laugh their way through labour, while a panicky Michelle hyperventilates. She and partner Gavin almost broke up because he didn’t want children – luckily, he had a change of heart.
