Episode 2: Breathe in the Air

Summary

A woman's body is found on the moors, and although it looks like suicide, Gently is convinced it is suspicious - even after finding out the victim had mood swings and suffered from motor neurone disease. She was a GP, estranged from her husband, and it isn't long before he is in the frame, although as the investigation moves to the doctor's home community - the same place where Rachel grew up - a secretive local company provides a new lead. Meanwhile, Bacchus celebrates his promotion, leaving Gently needing a new sergeant. Martin Shaw, Lee Ingleby and Lisa McGrillis star, with Lesley Nicol (Downton Abbey) and Jason Done (Waterloo Road).

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Clever and resourceful WPC Rachel Coles has proved her mettle and DCI George Gently wants her to take her sergeant’s exam and move to CID.

But knuckle-dragging Detective Sergeant Bacchus, a man with very set views on the place of women, is having none of it: “What’s the point of training them up? They just go off and have bairns!”

Yet he has to work with Rachel on the sort of us-and-them case that’s meat and drink to his whisky-chugging, man-of-the-people boss after a young GP is found dead in a beauty spot, clutching a syringe. It seems she committed suicide, but why?

Gently (Martin Shaw) is in his element as he head-butts smarmy lawyers and batters at the rock face of corporate greed when he and his little team investigate serious illness and death in a small town. Watch out for Lesley Nicol (Downton’s Mrs Patmore) as a grieving mum.
