Episode 1: Gently with the Women

Summary

A prostitute turns up at the station claiming to have been raped, and as Gently looks back at past cases, he is shocked to discover that very few have been successfully prosecuted - if they made it to court in the first place. Risking animosity from his colleagues, he becomes suspicious when he notices the same police inspector's name appearing repeatedly in the files. To complicate matters, the body of another rape victim is found, prompting a visit to the local brothel. Meanwhile, Bacchus has started an affair with Gemma, the wife of a fellow copper. Martin Shaw, Lee Ingleby and Lisa McGrillis star, with guest appearances from Denise Welch, Derek Riddell and Emily Woof.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Poor George Gently, no wonder he seems so weary; bearing the burden of 21st-century sensibilities in the north-east police force of the late 1960s must be exhausting.

In the first in a new series Gently (Martin Shaw) decides that his force has an appalling record when it comes to rape investigations. And he’s furious after his sergeant, Bacchus, is boorish and dismissive when a prostitute comes in to make a rape complaint.

Bacchus, who is firmly rooted in 1969, is no beacon of concern: “Who’s been raping you then, pet?” he blusters before Gently decides that something must be done. When the naked body of a young woman turns up by the river in Durham, he’s convinced that there’s a dangerous man on the loose.

It’s a meandering tale, but Shaw, Lee Ingleby – who makes Bacchus sympathetic, despite his hearty imperfections – and Lisa McGrillis as clever WPC Rachel Coles, are a good trio.
