Episode 1: The Man in the Shadows

Summary

The priest finds himself embroiled with MI5, which puts Lady Felicia in a compromising position - will she betray her friend to protect secrets from her own past? Drama, starring Mark Williams and Nancy Carroll.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Like the Midsomer villages, the fictional Kembleford is chocolate-box pretty yet awash with crime. So it’s lucky that the wise and kindly Father Brown is on hand to solve these mysteries using common sense and a lifelong observation of the human race.

In this episode the photogenic Cotswold village has been over-run with spies. “The Red Menace poses as much a threat as the Nazis did,” says the man from MI5 ominously, having announced that he operates under his own set of the laws. Strangely, so does Father Brown… although his rules come from a much higher order.

Viewers have really taken Mark Williams’s crime-solving cleric and these murder and morality tales to their hearts.
