Episode 3: Long Lost Family

Summary

Fifty-year-old Deborah Ozturk has spent years longing to find her birth mother and thank her for the sacrifice she made when she gave her up as a baby. Meanwhile, 74-year-old Ray Jones from West Sussex realised as an adult that there was a void in his life, after he was separated from his mother and younger brother at the age of two. However, during his search for his family the previous year, he accessed his case file and is now haunted by a missed opportunity. Presented by Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Watching someone’s heart break on camera is both desperately sad and a privilege, so you will want to reach through your screen to hug 74-year-old farmer, Ray. Brought up in a Barnardo’s home, Ray knew nothing of his family, until he recently saw the charity’s records of his childhood. They contained a letter that revealed to Ray the most poignant missed opportunity of his life. He sobs as he reads it aloud for the cameras.

It’s another remarkable episode in a brilliant series as we follow two searches. Ray wants to fill in the background to his life, to find out something about his mother and the half-brother he knows he has, somewhere.

Meanwhile, Deborah was adopted as a toddler by a lovely couple, who knew her teenage birth mother Joan. “It made me feel loved to know that she put me with a family where she thought I’d be safe.”
