Episode 1: Bordeaux

Summary

The chef embarks on a series of extended culinary breaks, visiting markets, restaurants, wineries, cafes and bars, looking for food excellence and also some innovative recipes that will encourage viewers to cook at home. He begins his first adventure in autumnal Bordeaux, where he helps judge a local wine contest and hires a 2CV for an excursion to the coast - abundant with mussels and oysters. At home, he cooks a memorable dish of steak frites with Bordelaise sauce.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Imagine you’re enjoying a city break and by sheer chance you bump into Rick Stein, who then generously offers to guide you around his favourite bits of, say, Berlin or Bologna. Then imagine you get on so well with Rick that back in Britain he insists on showing you how to bring some of the holiday magic back home by re-creating some of the food you’ve shared abroad.

None of that will happen, sadly, but this series offers a TV approximation as our Cornish chef guides us around the glories of Bordeaux in autumn – the markets, the restaurants, the bars, the wineries – then talks us through making three of its classic dishes for ourselves.
