Rating: 4 out of 5.

Some terrific finds this week in the archaeology show that widens our mental horizons.

One involves a character who could have stepped straight from BBC4’s own Detectorists, a chap called Derek who (after years of patient searching) found a hoard of Viking treasures in a Scottish field. It includes silver arm-rings, a decorated Christian crucifix – most likely plunder from a church – and a beautifully wrapped jar that reveals its secrets under a medical scanner.

But Alice Roberts introduces from finds elsewhere that are magical too, including an engraved pendant from a settlement in Yorkshire: it’s a staggering 11,000 years old.
