Summary

Glendale, California, 1931: Mildred Pierce, a young mother with a talent for baking, is left a "grass widow" after throwing her husband, Bert, out of the house. Episode 4: Part Four

Summary

Six years after opening her first restaurant as a successful business, Mildred sets up a second eatery with plans to establish a third. Veda is devastated when her piano teacher dies, and pursues a career in acting much to her mother's delight, until she reveals she is pregnant. Evan Rachel Wood joins the cast as the adult Veda, with Kate Winslet.

Review

Mildred is earning good money from her flourishing chain of short-order restaurants, though we learn in another burst of deadly dialogue: “It’s the pies that keep it
all afloat.” Ah yes, The Pies. In another astonishing development Mildred, will no longer serve chicken in her establishments — she’s branching out into seafood.

As if all this isn’t exciting enough, Veda’s piano teacher dies and a possible replacement is horribly rude about her talent (by the way, Veda has now grown up into Evan Rachel Wood). But Veda, as charming as toxic waste, is running with a fast crowd of unsuitable men and soon she is a girl in trouble, as Cher once sang.

Mother and daughter are quickly at serious loggerheads as worried Mildred (poor Kate Winslet, who has spent four episodes looking as if she has a headache) confronts her
ghastly offspring.
