Episode 4: Setting Out Your Stall

Summary

New information links the unexplained death of a market trader to a series of drug rapes in east London - but with that case still ongoing, Ucos officers are unable to question the chief suspect, so they have to look into their victim's past in their search for clues. Gerry finds a likely culprit in the shape of the market inspector who clamped his car, while Sandra has problems of a more personal nature when her hated mother arrives for a visit. Sheila Hancock guest stars.

Review

World-weary Sandra Pullman looks even more exasperated than usual when her demanding mother Grace (Sheila Hancock) turns up for a visit. The two women aren’t a good fit, thanks to their difficult shared history, but Grace is judgemental and berates Sandra for her lack of vegetables: “Wine doesn’t count as one of your five-a-day!” she yells across the kitchen.

Back at work, things aren’t much better as Sandra and her trio of truculent old geezers reinvestigate the suspicious death of a market trader. The general feeling is that the female victim was killed by a serial rapist who’s been drugging and attacking women.

Maybe it’s the case, but everyone is in an uncharacteristically sombre mood at Ucos. Even the office banter feels a bit lacking. Or it could just be boredom at the sheer repetition of daily life at the unit. For instance, this week Jack and Sandra visit the stall-holder’s widower a total of three times in almost identical scenes. A bit of variety would be nice.
