Episode 1: Pantaleone's

Summary

Gordon Ramsay heads to Denver, Colorado, where he meets the stubborn owner of Italian restaurant Pantaleone's, who appears to be firmly stuck in the past. Pete maintains he makes the best pizza in town - based on a review from the 1980s - but the fiery chef's own taste test proves the opposite. With Pete's wife Paulette and son Josh threatening to leave, can Gordon get through to him and save the business?

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Spare a thought for millionaire celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. Pretending to care about the fortunes of struggling restaurant outlets in Idaho can't be easy, especially after 76 – count 'em – episodes of contrived drama and half-baked harangues. No wonder the poor man looks shattered.

Season seven of this igneous farce begins with an emergency visit to Denver, Colorado, where Italian restaurant owner Pete is struggling to move with the times. With more than a whiff of Alan Partridge, Pete stubbornly maintains he produces the "Best Pizza in Denver", a bold claim based on a local newspaper review from the 1980s. Ramsay, of course, scoffs at this delusion.

Pete's wife and son are threatening to leave him if he doesn't mend his ways, so as usual it's up to our potty-mouthed hero to save the day. It's easy to forget, but the original UK version of this show was primarily focused on the details of running a successful restaurant. The US version is more like an action-packed soap.
