Episode 1: The Dog Rescuers with Alan Davies

Summary

In Birmingham, Herchy Boal visits an English bull terrier that is in a terrible state after being left in its own filth in a room with no food or water, while Luton inspector Stephanie deals with a disobedient Japanese Akita that is running circles around its owner.

Review

Be warned: this series contains some necessarily upsetting imagery. It finds the tousle-haired comedian, actor and dog lover on uncharacteristically serious form, as he pays tribute to the RSPCA vets and inspectors who care for Britain’s neglected pets.

It’s reported that every 30 seconds someone calls the RSPCA’s cruelty hotline. The programme follows inspectors as they visit homes to find dogs in dire need of rescue. One particularly appalling case involves a starving English bull terrier living in her own excrement. The young female inspector is understandably angry with its owner: “I just don’t understand how you can live with yourself, really.”

Meanwhile, a colleague reports on one of the worst cases he’s ever seen. Painfully matted and tangled, a neglected poodle is rushed to the operating theatre. While shaving her coat, vets are shocked when her two front paws fall off. Why? The poor little creature’s fur had tightened to such an extent, the blood supply to her paws had simply been cut off.

These dismaying tales are contrasted with lighter-hearted moments and merciful happy endings, presumably in a desperate effort to cheer us up. But having witnessed such cruelty, it’s hard to wash away the lingering sense of sorrow.
