Episode 17: Brick Like Me

Summary

There is a big change in Springfield when Homer wakes up one morning to find he and the world around him are made of Lego. To begin with, it seems like a pretty great existence - but Simpson Senior can't quite shake the feeling that everything is far from awesome.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This playful, high-concept episode shows that The Simpsons hasn’t lost its comedy chops, or in this case, blocks. Because as we join them Homer, the family and everyone in Springfield is made of Lego. Hands are pincers, water is composed of transparent studs, faces are decals, and so on.

At breakfast, Homer looks fondly at Maggie: “Ah, they’re so cute when they’re Duplo.” But soon, our yellow fellow starts to have visions of his normal cartoon self. So what gives..?

The timing of Brick like Me is unfortunate (it aired in the States just three months after The Lego Movie). And, perhaps as a result of the tortuous client-approval process, the episode has slightly softer gags than usual. But it’s a joyous conceit – clever, visually startling and a boxful of fun for the child in us all.
