Episode 1: City of Dogs

Summary

The intrepid reporter explores different aspects of Los Angeles, beginning by meeting the characters whose lives revolve around the city's neglected and feral dogs. He goes on patrol with a man on a mission to rescue some of the thousands of stray and ferocious pit bulls roaming the streets and meets hard-pressed staff at LA's largest animal shelter. Louis also encounters training gurus who claim to be able to take the ghetto out of the dog once it has been removed from that environment.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Genial Louis Theroux roams around some very rough bits of hellish South Los Angeles where violent crime is endemic and dogs are used as weapons.

What emerges after Theroux tours the area with an animal control officer is a depressingly familiar problem of poverty and violence. As more people lose their homes in the recession, dogs are thrown onto the streets. These strays might end up in an oversubscribed dog pound, but life there can be short. As the woman in charge elegantly puts it, dogs are frequently “euthanised for space”, ie they’re put down because there’s no room left.

Even if an attack dog is rescued, as we learn from one rueful and naive couple with a furious, restless, yapping pit bull, such animals can rarely be domesticated.
