Episode 5: Discovering: Ingrid Bergman

A profile of Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman, who won three Oscars and is best known for her role opposite Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca.

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A three-time Academy Award winner, Ingrid Bergman is one of the undisputed queens of Hollywood's original golden age. Beautiful, intelligent, sensitive and versatile, the Swedish-born actress lit up the screen in such classics as Casablanca, Gaslight and Hitchcock's Notorious. But like every great star, her personal life wasn't always a bed of roses.

This elegant profile examines her remarkable career, which was threatened with derailment when, at the height of her fame, she had an affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini. Both were already married at the time, resulting in a huge scandal that forced her to remain exiled in Europe for much of the 1950s.

But in a postscript torn straight from a Hollywood fairytale, she returned to public favour with her comeback role in Anastasia, for which she received her second and final Best Actress Oscar.

And to think she also directed all those films so beloved of Woody Allen... apologies, but that "joke" is mandatory.
