Episode 5: Call the Midwife

Summary

The nuns and midwives are busy preparing for Sister Evangelina's surprise jubilee celebrations, marking 50 years since she took her vows, but a face from the past threatens to ruin the party for the guest of honour. It's back to business when a young woman with Down's syndrome is brought in feeling unwell. To everyone's surprise, they discover she is six months pregnant, causing some of them to think the worst, and the staff are joined by new nurse Patsy, whose sense of humour and no-nonsense attitude make her an instant hit.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

After last week’s traumatic episode we are given little time to recover as we face yet another story that will tear out a tiny piece of your heart then throw it in your face. The midwives are called in to care for Sally, a young woman with Down’s syndrome (or “mongolism” as it’s unflinchingly referred to here, of course) who lives in an institution for young men and women with learning disabilities.

She and another inmate, Jacob, who has cerebral palsy, are special friends, but just how special becomes apparent very quickly. Soon the air is thick with unpleasant accusations. Back at Nonnatus House grumpy Sister Evangelina is more curmudgeonly than ever as her friends make plans for a celebration.
