Episode 9: Flo

Summary

Hannah visits her grandmother in the hospital, but is surprised by a strange request from her mother. Later, she goes out for a drink with her cousin who - in stark contrast to herself - is an overachieving medical student. Starring Lena Dunham.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

The show takes a sombre turn, as Hannah races back home to Michigan to visit her apparently dying grandmother, Flo (adorably played by Oscar-nominated Nebraska star June Squibb). The whole family are at her bedside: Hannah’s mum Loreen and her two sisters, the caustic Margot and emotionally manipulative Sissy.

Also there is Rebecca, Margot’s hostile medical student daughter (played to highly strung, socially indifferent perfection by Sarah Steele). Rebecca and Hannah clash over a disputed memory and Rebecca’s at-the-wheel texting, while Loreen and her sisters are also at loggerheads, bickering over who gets what when their mum shuffles off.

Despite the sensitive subject, there are still comic moments. Hannah’s mum asks her to comfort Flo by telling her that she and Adam are getting married, prompting a rebuke from Hannah: “I really thought you were more progressive than that. What do you even talk about in your women’s book group?”
