Episode 6: Free Snacks

Summary

Hannah lands a job writing advertorials for GQ magazine, but is worried the structured corporate environment will crush her creativity. Meanwhile, two of the girls see Ray in a new light as he and Marnie clash over lunch and Shoshanna rethinks things in light of his new-found success. Starring Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Hannah’s landed a paid writing gig at GQ! Despite her insistence that it’s a “literary magazine”, she’s working on what is essentially an extended advert for a department store, collaborating with people who say things like “fedoras are worse than genocide”. Living the dream it is not.

Other than Hannah, it’s Ray who takes centre stage in the episode, chasing (inexplicably) after Marnie. It may just be because the Ray/Marnie storyline is truly mind-numbing, but the overuse of Ray feels like a misstep, especially considering that two of the titular girls (namely Jessa and Marnie, who had so much potential) are failing to pull their narrative weight.

Having said that, Jessa’s completely unrealistic new job as a sales assistant in a kids’ clothing store does bear comedic fruit. “Christening dresses are usually white, aren’t they?” asks one bemused customer. “Not the chic ones,” Jessa replies.
