Hannah Horvath (Lena Dunham) enters her mid-20s settling into newfound domesticity with Adam...but she's still a volatile mess of anxieties, insecurities and uncertainty in Season 3 of this Emmy(R) and Golden Globe(R)-winning comedy series.

Episode 5: Only Child

Summary

Hannah attends her editor's funeral, where her excitement at being surrounded by the big shots of the publishing world is tempered by the news her ebook deal could be in jeopardy. Later, she tries to help Adam and his sister Caroline deal with their anger issues, while Ray gives Marnie some frank advice. Comedy, starring Lena Dunham.

Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Hannah’s total disregard for social niceties continues, as she and Adam attend David’s wake. She celeb-spots  – “Is that Zadie Smith?” – and then fails to hide her disbelief when introduced to David’s wife, Annalise. It’s not the most sophisticated of set-ups – the flamboyant, hard-dancing, Grindr-using David was married to a woman – but the resulting exchange is unavoidably funny.

A real highlight comes when Hannah attempts to negotiate a ceasefire between Adam and Caroline. She invites them to sit at “the listening table” and to share their grievances with each other. Adam dutifully obliges. “I feel like she’s an evil person,” he says, “who pukes on everything – metaphorically.”

With Hannah on such form there’s not a lot for the other girls to do. Shoshanna tells Jessa a few home truths (I applauded), while for Marnie there’s a predictable hook-up that demeans both characters involved.
