Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Adam is thrilled when he’s offered a role on Broadway. He duly rings Hannah, but – oh no! – she’s in the middle of an interview with Patti LuPone. It’s totally fine, though, Patti doesn’t mind, because Hannah is super-charming and adorable. So she answers – with a “so rude, I’m sorry”, and a what-can-you-do shrug – and then tells her new pal Patti all about her boyfriend’s good news.

But Patti plants doubts in Hannah’s mind that she struggles to shake off. Will Adam – despite being “really funny-looking” (Hannah’s description) – be fending off hordes of female fans? Meanwhile Richard E Grant returns, and look out for Desi, Adam’s new co-star, whom Shoshanna recognises from his role on One Tree Hill as “Lennon, the disabled gay hockey player”.

While the dialogue is sharp as ever, there are holes in the plot that are only widening. The girls seem to have completely forgotten the beach house row, and where’s Caroline? Fingers crossed for an end-of-season pay-off as entertaining as it is profound. Or is Lena Dunham doing a Hannah Horvath, and making it up as she goes along?
