Episode 7: Beach House

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Marnie decides that what the girls need is a weekend away at her mum’s mate’s beach house so they can “heal”. But she wants the healing to happen on her schedule, which gets thrown out entirely when Hannah bumps into her ex, Elijah, and invites him and his three friends round for dinner.

Inevitably the plentiful alcohol induces endless self-involved emotional statements that are mistaken for honest communication. Marnie and Hannah share a moment: “I might not seem OK and I might not be OK now, but, like, I am OK,” Marnie tells her sincerely nodding friend. It’s a chastening watch for those of us who have indulged in similarly intoxicated attempts at being deep and meaningful.

But Marnie’s insistence on honesty backfires when Shoshanna brands her friends “a bunch of f***ing whiny nothings”. It’s hard to disagree, but isn’t that the whole point of the show? Anyone who’s navigated the murky waters of young adulthood will recognise much of tonight’s episode, which, with Girls, is only ever a good thing.
