Episode 1: The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: The Murder in Angel Lane

Summary

Another chance to see the second instalment of the crime drama starring Paddy Considine as the pioneering 19th-century inspector. Having left the Metropolitan Police under a cloud, Whicher's days as a detective are behind him. However, when he saves a respectable country lady from a violent robbery in a dangerous part of London, she hires him to investigate the savage murder of her 16-year-old niece. The investigation pits Whicher against wealthy and powerful figures, as well his former colleagues in the Met, and leads to a psychiatric institution where he must confront his own demons. Co-starring Olivia Colman, Shaun Dingwall and Mark Bazeley.

Review

After a successful 2011 adaptation of Kate Summerscale’s bestseller The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, ITV has hung on to its real-life central character for a second outing. But while the book was based on a true story, The Murder in Angel Lane is entirely fiction, written by Neil McKay (Appropriate Adult).

Paddy Considine is back as Victorian detective Jack Whicher, though after that first case ended in ignominy he’s no longer a police officer. But he is a man of decency and principles and when a genteel woman (Olivia Colman) is in obvious distress, he offers his help. She wants to find her niece, who’s disappeared with her newborn baby. The hunt takes Whicher through London’s dim alleyways and homes for fallen women.

It’s classily written and both Considine and, of course, Colman make you care.
