Episode 4: Copenhagen to Oslo

Summary

Michael Portillo explores Scandinavia, braving one of the world's oldest rollercoasters in Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens. He then crosses the Oresund Bridge linking Denmark to Sweden, retracing the journey of a train that carried a revolutionary Russian passenger on an epic voyage, before test-driving a vintage Volvo in Gothenburg. Crossing into Norway, Michael discovers how in 1913 the nation expressed its distinctively modern identity in plays, paintings and polar exploration.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Michael Portillo once more works that very fashionable colour-blocking with his lime green jacket and vibrant pink shirt as he journeys from Copenhagen to Oslo. Stopping off in Malmo, Sweden, after travelling by train across The Bridge’s magnificent Oresund Bridge, he has a traditional Swedish sauna. “On the whole, I don’t take my clothes off with people I don’t know,” he chuckles nervously, though he decorously keeps his pants on for the chilly-plunge bit of the experience. Then there’s a picnic in the woods, a visit to the Volvo museum and a poignant little trip to Oslo to lay a flower on the grave of his hero and travelling “companion”, George Bradshaw, author of the beloved railway guides.
