Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

You expect Law & Order to use real-life news stories as plot fodder, but now Elementary is ripping its cases from the headlines. Here we have a scenario that seems to have been inspired by IT specialist Edward Snowden’s disclosure of top US surveillance secrets to the press, although the mystery ultimately proves to be less interesting than the personal affairs of Holmes and Watson. In a rather touching exchange, the pair muse on loneliness, companionship and romance – and even though Sherlock insists on being “post-love” after having his fingers burned by Irene Adler, we’re left feeling that he’s not being entirely honest about his feelings.
