Review

The problem with Elementary is that it keeps trying to pass off rather hokey mysteries as something more cerebral. Tonight’s crime is ostensibly all about an impossible equation that’s linked to the murders of two esteemed mathematicians. But really, anyone with a nodding acquaintance with, say, the Famous Five, will be able to spot the wrongdoer a mile away.

Of more interest is Joan Watson, whose backstory is probed in greater depth. The result is a sweet scene in which a caring Holmes tries to stop his friend from making a big mistake. We certainly never got such levels of empathy in Conan Doyle’s original stories.
