Review

We’re further encroaching on Sherlock territory with this second season opener as the master detective and Joan Watson pay a visit to London. But once we get past the inevitable shots of Big Ben, Trafalgar Square and the like, this turns out to be a very jolly affair. The highlights include Rhys Ifans turning up as Sherlock’s “indolent man-child” brother Mycroft, who has commandeered 221b for his own purposes, while Sean Pertwee also proves good value as on-the-edge Gareth Lestrade. The case itself is a little run of the mill, but there’s more than enough witty sparring between the Holmes siblings to make up for it.
