Episode 2: Building the Dream

Summary

Charlie Luxton helps Bill and Angie Jenkins, who plan to knock down their uneconomical bungalow on the bank of the River Thames and build a new home to fit in with the location. Potentially, the couple could have an investment profit of £330,000 by opting to self-build, and they visit a nearby property for inspiration on how to make their project more stylish.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Bill and Angie Jenkins have lived in a tumbledown shack on the Thames riverside at Staines for ten years. But now they want to tear it down and build a stylish, energy-efficient chalet bungalow, mainly so Bill can have his own dressing room. He’s ex-Navy and likes everything shipshape and orderly, while Angie is… well, Angie is not ex-Navy.

Affable architectural designer Charlie Luxton meets them to talk through their projected £670k build and immediately spots a problem – it’s got the first north-facing sun room. The episode is full of moments like this when Charlie’s incredulity at some of Bill and Angie’s suggestions stretches to a point where his professionalism kicks in and he offers neat, simple solutions. It’s a joyful thing to watch.
