Episode 1: Building the Dream

Summary

Charlie Luxton meets people as they bid to turn an empty plot of land into their dream home on an affordable budget. Adam and Vicki Nicholl have become tired of city life and decide to move back to the Hertfordshire village of Pirton where they grew up to build a barn-style property in the garden of Adam's mum's home. The pair are convinced they can save around £100,000 simply by not purchasing an existing property.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

In contrast to Grand Designs, artfully tousled architectural designer Charlie Luxton brings a more prosaic approach to self-builds. He wants to prove that building your own home can cost less than a ready-made property.

Here he follows Adam and Vicki Nicholl, who wanted to move back to their childhood village in Hertfordshire but found their budget didn’t stretch to what they wanted. So instead of splashing half a million on an existing house they decided to build their own for £400k.

There’s precious little drama in their project and Luxton is genuinely helpful, so there’s not much to do but coo over the finished home. Though there is an emotional postscript.
