Episode 20: The Relationship Diremption

Summary

Penny tries to help Sheldon when he starts to wonder whether he is wasting his time studying string theory. Meanwhile, during a dinner, Raj discovers Howard once embarrassed himself on a date with Emily. Stephen Hawking guest stars.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

You wouldn’t think that science-phobic Penny could help boy wonder Sheldon with his dilemma over the compactification of extra dimensions. But the actress’s talent for cutting through jibber-jabber is truly a thing of wonder. The upshot is that Sheldon considers walking away from his beloved string theory – a prospect that ends up in drunken shame.

Raj, meanwhile, decides that he and new flame Emily should double-date with Howard and Bernadette. And what sounds like a terrible idea most assuredly is. It’s a knuckle-gnawingly funny episode, with an invisible cameo from Stephen Hawking. Who knew that a slow, minute-long zoom onto an office door could be so funny, or have such a great pay-off?
