Rating: 4 out of 5.

Season seven’s Christmas episode is the Big Bang take on It’s a Wonderful Life. With a despondent Sheldon summoned to Texas to assist in his sister’s home birth, the others imagine what their lives would be like without him. It’s a tacit acknowledgement of the show’s key component, and the fact that it would be an empty vessel without him, but it also allows us the fun of some crazy “what if”s: Penny trying to seduce Sheldon, Raj and Leonard in unnervingly convincing fat suits, Howard... well, let’s not go there!

An increasingly traumatised Sheldon keeps in touch by Skype (“I’ve seen things… lady things!”), and there are cosy touches that are never allowed to get out of hand. It’s a well-judged delight.
