Episode 8: The One That Got Away

Summary

A photo featuring a missing 19-year-old music student turns up in a charity shop donation bag on the anniversary of her disappearance 17 years earlier, prompting Sandra to suspect the work of a serial killer. However, as the team gets to work identifying and tracking down the other people in the picture, increasing pressure to hand over the investigation forces Sandra to consider her future, and she turns to a familiar face to help her make her decision. Amanda Redman stars, with Denis Lawson, Dennis Waterman and Nicholas Lyndhurst.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Remember how James Bolam’s character Jack Halford used to chat to his late wife at a memorial site in his garden? He goes one better in this episode, appearing from beyond the grave to offer Sandra career advice in a bittersweet episode that steers series ten in a new direction. It’s odd seeing Jack again (and a typically soppy New Tricks touch) but it’s part of a strong story that revolves around a series of abductions that Sandra never solved at the start of her career as a detective.

Adding heft to the cast list is Phoebe Nicholls, simply brilliant as a lonely, slightly raddled former model. Also back is that smooth French detective who Sandra's been flirting with. They’ve gone beyond flirting now.
