Episode 4: Fatherly Love

Summary

Ronnie and Sam lead the investigation into the death of a wealthy woman whose body was dumped in the Thames. The team initially focuses inquiries on the victim's abusive ex-husband, with whom she had been involved in a bitter struggle over custody of their daughter Holly, but the case heads in a different direction when the detectives discover the teenager was infatuated with her mother's new partner. With Patrick Baladi and an appearance by Bradley Walsh's son Barney.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The family of a murdered woman is acting strangely: does the teenage daughter have a crush on her stepfather? Or is the stepfather preying on an impressionable minor? It’s a tricky one for the team to get to the bottom of and a case that will certainly keep viewers guessing at home. In fact, this is the best episode of this series so far, featuring, as it does, a decent guest turn from Patrick Baladi (the go-to guy for casting directors wanting to suggest middle-class sleaze), while legal eagle Jake suddenly acquires some charisma when he gambles, Perry Mason-style, on a hunch at the trial. There’s nothing like courtroom theatrics to bring out the best in a chap.
