Episode 3: Paternal

Summary

A man is found shot dead in a hotel room and the cash he was carrying has gone missing. Ronnie and Sam discover the victim owed his ex-wife thousands of pounds in child support for their terminally ill son and had been lying to his girlfriend about his line of work. As the investigation progresses, the detectives focus their inquiries on the child's grandfather. Did he commit murder to recoup the unpaid money or is there more to this family set-up than first appears? Meanwhile, at the Crown Prosecution Service, Kate and Jake work out their differences. Guest starring Ian Bleasdale (Casualty).

Review

The influx from Holby General continues as Georgia Taylor – going great guns as barrister Kate Barker – is joined by Ian Bleasdale (formerly Josh from Casualty) and Amanda Mealing (Holby City’s Connie). He plays a man acting decidedly shifty in the wake of the shooting of a Walter Mitty-style fantasist, she the smarmy defence lawyer (is there any other kind in Law & Order: UK?) butting heads with prosecutor Jake.

As ever, the case is suitably twisty, although it’s hard not to notice how underused Peter Davison is in this series as CPS boss Henry – all he seems to do is put his reading glasses on and then take them off, while all the time looking fraught.
